David Beckham was photographed attending a press conference at the Perez Art Museum in Miami on Wednesday afternoon (February 5, 2014). Also in attendance were Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and MLS commissioner Don Garber. At the event, the former England captain officially announced that he will establish a Major League Soccer franchise in Miami, Florida. "I want to make this my own team," David Beckham said. "This is an exciting time for myself, my family, my friends and partners, and it is something we are really looking forward to bringing to Miami."

If accepted, Miami will be the 22nd in the MLS and the team will not start competing until at least 2016. Besides, David Beckham said that he is already in discussions to build a 25,000-seat stadium. However, the ex-Manchester United midfielder, who holds a $ 25m option in his MLS contract to start a franchise, didn’t confirm any names of players who he wants to attract to Miami. "We will bring great players in," Beckham said. "The fortunate thing about my career is players are already interested in coming to Miami.”
