Magnus Carlsen Becomes Chess's Newest World Champion at The Age of 22

Magnus Carlsen was crowned chess's newest world champion at the World Chess Championship in India on Friday (November 22, 2013). The Norwegian won the match after defeating Viswanathan Anand, The World champion since 2007, with a score of 6.5-3.5 in the competition in Chennai. At a mere 22 years old, Magnus Carlsen became the second-youngest world chess champion as well as the first Western champion since 1975.

Previously, the chess superstar won a number of prizes, including the Chess Oscars. In 2004 when he was only 13 years old, he became the world’s youngest grandmaster. Since July 2011, Magnus Carlsen has been the highest rated player. Plus, in 2013, he was named as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world.

His achievements are really remarkable, but it is not a surprise. As soon as Magnus Carlsen was introduced to chess by his father Henrik, he showed off his superior intelligence as a toddler. The prodigy then started playing chess at the age of five and had his first competition at the age of eight. He began his chess tournaments around the world when he was 12, and became world number 1 at a mere 19.

Magnus Carlsen was named as one of Cosmopolitan magazine’s sexiest men of 2013, alongside Hugh Jackman and Bradley Cooper. He also covered GQ magazine as well as appeared on television’s “The Colbert Report.”
